Women hold a precarious role in art history. Only a handful of outstanding female artists have been admitted into the Western Canon. In recent years we have seen an increase of art exhibits dedicated solely to women, highlighting the talent that is still vastly untapped. Although half of the recent MFA graduates in the Tristate Area are women, the percentage of women represented by New York galleries remains only 30%.
MATERIAL ARCHIVE takes a closer look at the women that are current candidates or recent alumnae of the Queens College MFA program. The exhibition presents works that function as artifacts, loaded with personal or historical meaning. Crossing generational and international borders, each work serves as an archive of personal relationships and historic events. The media used include video, sculpture, ceramic, photography, and painting.
